Jenn Samos lived a quiet life. Loved and sheltered by her family and friends, she knew nothing of the huge secret being kept from her growing up.
Deeply in love with her best friend, the man she thought would be hers forever. One little argument and he was gone. She never understood why.
Now three years later, he’s back. And with him, her world as she knows it, comes crashing down around her. Sean says she needs to remember. But Jenn doesn’t understand.
Can One Simple Memory really get them out of the mess they are in, or will someone die to keep secrets buried?

I am so excited for you guys to get to know the author a bit more! We are so lucky to have an interview with her, exclusive to Heather & Horses!  Have a read, check out my review, and drop by Jean Kelso’s page and let her know Jessa at Heather & Horses sent you!

Questions about the author

  • How long have you been an author?
I have been an author since 2014. I first self published One Simple Memory at that time. And began working on my next book. I was then picked up by Booktrope, who has since shut down (May 31) so I am now back to self publishing again, but OSM went through a makeover when I was picked up by them.
  • What is your favorite book?
I don’t have just one favorite, I have quite a few actually. But if you need an author who is my go to, I would say Pam Godwin. She writes a book and never lets me down. I love all her books.
  • When reading, do you prefer eBooks or physical copies?
I read both actually. When I can’t decide what to read on my kindle, I pick up a paperback. The pleasure of reading comes in all forms.
  • What book(s) are you currently reading?
I am currently reading The Fixed Trilogy by Laurelin Paige and am loving it.
  • What is your favorite romantic movie?
I have to go with Dirty Dancing. I just love that movie. I watch it every time it comes on.
  • What advice can you give to aspiring writers?
No matter the obstacles, never give up. Try and try again. Your time will come. Be atient.

Questions about the book

  • Who was your inspiration for Sean?
I honestly don’t know. I had a vision of the character but couldn’t really place him. In the beginning I thought possibly Alex Pettyfer, but the more I wrote, the less I was so sure. So, really, I have to leave that up to the readers on who they picture.
  • What gave you the idea for One Simple Memory?
I was actually off work, ill. That horrible C word. Cancer. Sitting at home all the time with nothing to do and the story just started to come to me. The more I thought about it, I couldn’t help but start writing it.
  • Do you believe you would be friends with Jenn if she wasn’t a fictional character?
Of course. So far, I haven’t written a character I haven’t connected with.
  • How do you do your research for your novels?
The internet. You can find anything on the internet. With me living in Canada, I had to research the area I based the story on and the laws. I may have twisted a few of the facts, but the story is fiction.
  • Do you write full-time or part-time?
I’m a part timer. I only write when I can really set my mind to it. The characters really need my attention and my mind is scattered 24/7 so it is when I find that moment of focus, I write.
  • How did you get the idea for the cover of the book?
This is the second cover for my books. But in all reality, I try to take pieces of the story and put them on the cover. Plus I have an amazing designer.

My Review

**I was given this book by the author, this did not influence my review in any way.**

One Simple Memory was a great, quick read that pulled me in from the very beginning. The characters of Jenn and Sean were compelling and well written and I enjoyed reading about them. Their personalities were easy to get a feel for and I enjoyed their shared history. From the very first chapter, my interest was piqued and I couldn’t get enough of the book! Jean Kelso has a gift for writing descriptions about the scenery she places her characters in and I felt as if I was there. The action was fast paced at the beginning and I was so excited to see what journey the characters embarked on. I can honestly say I was prepared for the kidnapping, running, and consequent fight back that I experienced when reading this book.

I enjoyed the diversity in the characters in the book. With most of the secondary characters being related to Sean and in the drug world, they were all their own characters instead of duplicates with different names, which was refreshing. Jake was well written and easily disliked as one of the villains of the book, as was Simon, and their father was every bit a drug lord, mob boss mafioso. I liked Jenn’s back story and how she was more or less betrayed by her father, yet she was able to grow into a strong, responsible woman.

The one thing I did not enjoy as much as the rest of the book was their apparent disregard for their own safety when they were in Las Vegas. Yes, they talked about being careful and changing their appearance, but I was a bit confused as to why they stayed in Vegas instead of continuing on. I enjoyed reading about their time on the strip, but for the reason of why they were hiding and on the run, it never felt frantic enough or that they were appropriately worried. However, this did not keep me from continuing the book and enjoying it immensely.

Their love story about second chances kept me entertained and reading without interruptions until the very last word. I am eagerly awaiting the second book!

I gave this book 4.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book and the author interview!  I hope you guys can say the same! What did you think of the interview?  Let us know in the comments! Thanks for reading!

#30DayReadingIndie Day 3-Favorite Place To Read

Hey Guys!!  It’s time for day 3 of the #30DayReadingIndie Challenge! I love the idea behind this challenge and I hope if you haven’t already joined in, you’ll gallop on over to Book Enthusiast Promotions to find the #30DayReadingIndie Challenge to join in!

Day 3 is all about your favorite place to read. I’m one of those people that can fall asleep anywher, coincidentally, I can read anywhere too.  I’m not picky, if there’s a place I can sit and bury my nose in a book, I’m a happy worm!  But if I was to choose one place that I love to read the most, it would be out with my horses.

I’m a country girl in many ways, but definitely at heart.  My horses are my life and my passion and they make the best reading companions. Whether I’m in the hay barn, reading in the arena, sitting atop a magical steed of my own, or hanging out in the trailer at a horse show, I’m happiest hanging with them with a book in my hand.  Usually, when I’m at home, I can count on my dogs and chickens joining me and my horses, and we all just spend time together while I enter another world completely comfortable with my surroundings.  There’s always some iota of background noise with these crazies around and I can’t imagine anything better!  With as hot as the temperatures have been in Arizona lately, I haven’t been able to read as much outside with them as I’ve been spraying them down with the hose.  We all know physical books and water don’t mix well.  Add me to that mix and it’s just a disaster. :3 But I’m still reading like crazy! Maybe if I find a waterproof case for my tablet, I could take my Kindle app out with me.  Until then, I’ll just read in the AC dream of ponies prancing through my head.  😀

Where are your favorite places to read?  Do you have one or many? Let us know and join in on the challenge!

Happy page turning!

This giveaway blog hop is fun because it’s all about one of my favorite horse/cowboy books and it’s an author that I am blessed to call a friend! Carly Kade is a fabulous author who is new to the published book scene and I have to say, her foray into the literary world has been an absolute splash!  I have actually read and reviewed In The Reins and if you’d like to see what I thought, please click on through to my review! You guys are lucky because I have a guest post from our fabulous author here and I have to say, its fabulous! Let’s get right to it!

Without further ado, here is our guest post from debut author Carly Kade!

McKennon Kelly’s Cowboy Songs

Guest Post by Carly Kade, Author of In The Reins

One of my favorite questions from my recent Heather and Horses In The Reins author interview was “Who was my inspiration for McKennon Kelly?” so I couldn’t wait to expand on that very interview question for Heather and Horses Book Review readers when I was asked to contribute with a guest post.

I still remember the journal entry that started my journey writing In The Reins. McKennon Kelly came to me (like lightning) in the form of a poem. I vividly remember the day I furiously scrawled him in my journal. It felt otherworldly and I didn’t want to miss a thing, a thought, a moment of his inception. Thank heaven that I always keep a journal with me. That poem ended up being the intro to the book. Seeing it in print in the opening pages of In The Reins makes my spurs jingle.

carly kade picture for guest post

I love to listen to music when I write … all kinds of music … what I listen to depends on my mood.  Some days it’s classical, sometimes it’s a movie soundtrack, other days it’s jazz or classic rock, and a lot of the time it was country when I was writing In The Reins.  It got me thinking about what a playlist for a Romeo in Wranglers with a secret and a special way with horses might sound like so I went ahead and made one!

But, before you tune into his songs, you’ll have to meet McKennon Kelly (just in case you haven’t yet) in this short but sweet intro video!

Now that you’ve gotten up close and personal with McKennon Kelly, my handsome cowboy creation from In The Reins.  Here are 5 of my favorite cowboy songs from McKennon’s playlist.  Happy Listening!

  1. ‘Traveler’ by Chris Stapleton
  1. ‘Cowboys And Angels’ by Dustin Lynch
  1. ‘Backroad Song’ by Granger Smith
  2. ‘Die A Happy Man’ by Thomas Rhett
  1. Quite Like You’ by Shane Smith & The Saints

McKennon Kelly comes from the part of me that is in love with love.  As I turned my words into a man, I took the best from the ones I once knew (and those I still know), the ones I’ve read about in my favorite books, all the ones I’ve imagined, and mixed those qualities with all the things I wish men could be then sprinkled in a little of what I imagined a cowboy who can make the eight on the back of a raging bull would be like.

McKennon is the best little pieces of everything and everyone I’ve experienced in life.  My heart was a flutter as I created him.  I am proud of McKennon Kelly.  I hope he sparks a smile across readers’ lips as they turn the pages of In The Reins.  He certainly makes me smile as I continue to write his story.

Want more?  Listen to all of McKennon’s tunes! Here’s —–> McKennon’s Playlist

If you enjoyed the music featured in this blog post be sure to canter over to my YouTube channel and visit the book’s unofficial soundtrack.  The songs compiled in the “Songs that Inspired In The Reins” playlist were my close companions while writing McKennon and Devon’s story.

I love sharing updates with my readers!  Thank you to Jessa for this opportunity to share more about McKennon Kelly in this guest blog post.  I am so excited about the journey this series is taking me on!  As McKennon and Devon’s story continues, I will be sharing sneak peeks, updates and new release info on my blog for readers that can’t wait to find out what happens next for the handsome cowboy and his wannabe cowgirl.

Synopsis: What would you do if on your way home from your boring work, all of a sudden a handsome stranger leaps into the back of your car and asks you to drive him to the airport?

Be terrified? Threaten him and hope he gets out and leaves you alone? Those were my first instincts as well.

There was something in his eyes, something in the words he said that made me pause though. What if this beautiful man really did need my help? What if my refusal meant not only that his safety hung in the balance, but that of the entire country? So I drove him to Heathrow Airport, and my adventure began…

What a day. I sigh and rest my forehead against the steering wheel. After getting called in for my semi-annual appraisal and having all my achievements from the past six months swept under the rug because Karen took credit for them, I can’t imagine how today could get any worse.

Of course, traffic can always worsen any day. It’s warm, too warm to be driving a twenty-year-old rust-bucket without air conditioning. And opening the window does nothing except let in more hot air and fumes from the thousands of cars surrounding me in what has got to be a record for west London. The traffic is spectacularly horrible for a Thursday.

Can’t I catch a fucking break?

I pick up my mobile and after scanning the surrounding vehicles, I figure it’s safe enough to make a call. No coppers around at the moment. The last thing I need is another ticket.

“Hey, Maggie?” I say, greeting the groggy voice on the other end of the line.

“Yeah, Tess, what’s up?”

“Nothing. Same old, life’s a bitch. Shall we go out tonight? I could use the distraction.” The car ahead of me moves but I decide it’s not worth the effort to put mine in first gear, just to creep ahead four feet.

“Sounds great, but I have a date, and then straight to work. Another day perhaps?” Maggie yawns on the other end. Typical, ever since she’s started working the midnight shift at the airport, her routine has been all over the place.

“A date, huh? I’m jealous. Who’s the lucky guy?” I ask, even though I already suspect it’s that guy she works with, Alec, whom she’s been going on about nonstop lately.

“I finally decided enough is enough and asked out Alec. You know nowadays you can’t sit back and wait for men to make the first move. That’s all in the past. The dating scene is all about equal opportunities.”

“Mhm, if you say so. I guess I’m a bit old-fashioned that way.” Which is probably why I haven’t had a date in months.

“Say, you wanna talk about what’s going on? I have a little while before I need to start getting ready.”

“Thanks. Well, as I said. Same old.” I sigh, and squeeze the bridge of my nose to get rid of the beginnings of a tension headache.

“Your boss, Frank-something still bothering you?”

“No, I mean yes. Sort of. I had my appraisal today. Can you believe it? Of all my suggestions which were actually implemented these past six months, none of that was mentioned. That tart I told you about, Karen, presented everything like it was her idea, after making me do the groundwork. And now it looks like I’ve been doing fuck all and I’m not pulling my weight,” I rant.

“I see. Same old indeed. What can you do? People like her will do anything to get ahead, even if it means trampling those in her way. Keep calm, bide your time and return the favor or find another job. No other option.”

“Another job where? I ought to be grateful I have one at all with the way things have been going.” I take a deep breath and grip the steering wheel tighter until my knuckles turn white. I wonder if things ever get easier.

“True. If you ever change your mind on shift work, I could ask around at work?”

“Thanks, Maggie. That’s very sweet. I’ll let you know.” I’m getting desperate, but I’m not ready to work nights. Yet.

“Sure thing, Tess. OK, I’d better have a shower and all. I want to look my best for tonight.”

“Break a leg. And if he turns out to be a dick, I’ll break both of his.”

“Cheers. I’ll let you know how it goes.”

I put down the phone again, feeling slightly better after venting to Maggie. What are friends for, eh? The space in front of my car has opened up even further and I finally do pull ahead.

Metal boxes in all shapes and sizes as far as the eye can see. Perhaps there’s an accident up ahead. It’s going to take at least an hour to get to the motorway from here in this mess. That means I won’t make it home until God knows when.

Urgh. I rest my head back on the steering, wondering if anyone would notice if I had a short nap behind the wheel.

The click of my rear door followed by a gust of air causes a cold shiver to creep down my spine. Someone’s behind me!

“What the hell?” I instinctively snatch up my handbag and phone from the passenger seat while turning around as best I can to face the intruder.

“Shh…” The man cowering half on the back seat makes a calming motion with his hand, but doesn’t look directly at me. My heart is hammering in my throat, threatening to make me freeze up, but I react almost on autopilot anyway.

“Get out! Get the hell out of my car!” I shout, while rummaging furiously in my purse. “I have pepper spray.” My fingers grasp a small deodorant bottle. “And I’m not afraid to use it!”

“Be careful with that, if you blind yourself we’re both done for.” His gentle and calm tone surprises me. If he’s trying to mug me, he’s got a strange technique.

“I… what do you mean, we’re both done for?” I’m still pointing the deodorant bottle in his general direction, but am suddenly not so sure I want to spray him with it.

“I need you to drive. I swear I have a good reason to get into your car. Also, you’ve got that the wrong way around.”

My fingers shake even more intensely as he reaches out for the can, and twists the nozzle in his direction.

“Shit. I’m sorry. Thanks. I mean…” Why the hell am I apologizing to this criminal? Still, I feel like a total idiot for threatening to spray him with what is essentially perfume. I suppose it would hurt if it ends up in his eye, but it’s not quite mace, is it? I lower my hand and take a proper look at him.

The stranger is still sort of hiding half in the foot well and half on the seat, skittishly looking out the window, while sneaking glances in my direction. He doesn’t look like a mugger. But then, I’ve never been mugged, how would I know what a mugger looks like?

Still, his suit and shirt make him look more like a businessman than a criminal. Or a waiter perhaps.

“Good thing you’re no longer intent on making me smell like… Lush Lavender, is it? Yeah. Not really my style,” he says with a subtle smile on his face.

A joke, really? Now?

“There’s no accounting for taste,” I respond, while keeping my gaze fixed on his eyes. Green, bright, focused. “Now, if you don’t mind explaining yourself.”

“Of course. What would you say if I told you that there are some very bad people heading to Heathrow right now with a cargo that could destroy the world as we know it?” he says.

“I would ask if you’ve been drinking.” I continue to stare at him, but he’s unfazed by my reaction and smiles again. How is he so calm? This whole thing has got to be a joke.
